Level 4 · Tested in the physical world

DataHow's software steers a Merck Serono antibody perfusion bioreactor for 20 days and reaches a cell-volume target standard runs miss

Self-driving labs usually make molecules or materials; this one steers living cell cultures for weeks, in the step of making a drug once it is found. Each goal was tried in one or two bioreactors at one company, against three unsteered ones, with results shown as plots, not effect sizes. For the new clone the model got it right only after retraining on half the run's data, and product quality was not controlled.
