About AI4S.fyi

AI4S.fyi tracks how AI is entering scientific research: what it can do now, how much evidence supports it, who is driving it, and which parts of the scientific loop are still open. It puts research, people, organizations and capital on one map, and checks every judgment against a primary source.

Materials science × computer science × product and operations, following how AI-for-Science research results become scientific workflows people can use.

Why this exists

“I try to keep track of a lot of different trends and research topics that the community is exploring. I often tell students it’s better to skim 10 papers than to read one in detail, because then you get 10 points in your cloud of what might be possible—or even skim 100 abstracts. What you want to be able to do is connect important ideas that have not yet been connected.”Jeff Dean, 2026 · Video ↗

AI4S.fyi is my attempt to connect those pieces: what is becoming possible, what already has experimental evidence, and what is still only an early signal.

What AI4S.fyi tracks

Research

  • Timeline

Dated developments: papers, experiments, model releases, labs and partnerships.

  • Evidence briefs

Close reads of single results: what was shown, what is uncertain, and what evidence would settle it.

People & organizations

  • People

Researchers, founders and investors, with their roles, papers and organizations.

  • Companies

Every organisation with a page here: its research, interviews, people and rounds, and for the frontier labs AI4S.fyi's own reading of their direction.

Capital

  • Funding

Rounds and investors, each with its source and, where stated, what the money is for.

Arguments

  • Commentary

Arguments from researchers, builders and investors, and where they disagree.

Open questions

  • Unresolved questions, revised as the evidence changes.

How the pieces connect

AI4S.fyi is one connected record. Researchers link to their papers and organizations, a funding round links a company to its investors, and a commentary piece links to its author and the events it discusses.

Evidence standard

Claims are not collapsed into one score. Every graded entry carries two separate marks: how far the evidence went, and who checked it.

Validation depth

  1. 1Exists

A result, system, dataset or benchmark has been released, with no result reported on it yet. Its existence alone does not establish a claim about the world.

  2. 2Computed

The result exists in software: a benchmark score, prediction, proof, generated candidate or simulated outcome. A benchmark that scores models belongs here even when its tasks are built from real measurements: ranking models on existing data is computing, not checking. So is a new benchmark or dataset released with models' scores on it, and a speed or accuracy measured by running software on ordinary computers: running code is computing.

  3. 3Checked against existing evidence

The result is evaluated against measurements, records or operational systems that already exist, under a defined evaluation procedure. What is checked is a particular result, such as a prediction, a design or a forecast, not a ranking of models on a benchmark, which is rung 2. A model's own predictions scored against real measurements or records it was not trained on (held-out experiments, clinical labels, observed weather) are rung 3, even when the release is a database of predictions; the database alone is rung 2. A single worked example that reproduces an already-known result is not a defined procedure.

  4. 4Tested in the physical world

A new experiment or physical execution is performed because of the result: something is synthesized, measured, or run on physical hardware beyond ordinary computing, such as a quantum processor, a robot or a lab instrument.

  5. 5Used in practice

The result moves beyond a research demonstration into sustained scientific, engineering, clinical or commercial use, or into a regulated clinical trial.

Who checked it

A sample made by the original team can be strong physical evidence, but it is not yet an independent replication. The full rules, and where claims sit today →
