How to read a round
- Who said it. Each round is marked company, when the company, an investor or counsel announced it, or media, when only the named outlet reported it. The two differ more often than you would think: a fund's size quoted as a round, a cumulative total quoted as one raise.
- What the price means. A valuation appears only with who stated it. Most rounds have none on the record, and a blank is not a low number.
- Who confirms an investor. Leads come from the announcement. The other investors are often copied from press reports, so each is checked against the investor's own site where it has one: a ✓ links to the portfolio page or the investor's own post naming the company. No ✓ is not a doubt; many funds do not list every company they back.
- Stated use of proceeds. Each round carries up to three tags for what its announcement says the money will build (models, data, a wet lab, an automated lab, the clinic, manufacturing, sales, hiring) or "not stated". A tag is the company's plan in its own words, not a sign the capability exists. What was built shows up as graded research on the timeline, which the evidence column and each company page set beside the rounds.
- What it is evidence of. A round is evidence about the field, not the technology: which directions are being funded, which researchers are leaving labs to found companies and who backs them, which is where the jobs and the collaborators will be. Whether a method works is graded on the timeline, never here.
How this page is kept
Every figure here was read at the linked source. Databases such as Crunchbase, PitchBook and Tracxn are used to find rounds and investors and to cross-check names, but never cited: a figure or name appears only once the company, an investor, counsel, a filing or a named outlet states it. A round that could only be seen in a search snippet is left off until it can be read. A round keeps its original currency; beside it, a figure in another currency shows its dollar value at the ECB euro reference rate of the announcement date, marked ≈. Company totals are kept per currency and converted the same way. Debt, convertibles and grants are marked and left out of equity totals. New rounds arrive through the timeline's daily runs, which read the trade press three times a day: each round they record is written here in the same push, once it has been read at source, and linked to its timeline entry.
