Most science models are trained once and then stand still, and a lab that wants a new skill in one trains a new model. The claim here is that a smaller model's strengths can be moved into a larger one, which the 8B-to-27B run is the test of, and that the filtering is what makes it work: without the verification step the same supervision drops scientific reasoning from 55.0% to 50.6%, and scattering it at random costs 6.3 and 12.1 points. The open 8B checkpoint lets someone outside the company check what the recipe produced.
